14 17 Interprovincial Athletics Competition
(14, U16, U18)
A new athletics season is beginning
and from the various programmes I have seen, there are many opportunities for
athletes, both Junior and Senior, to participate at various levels and continue
their journey in Athletics.
The 14 17 Interprovincial
competition is unique as it is the only formal competition where both Junior
(14 years of age) and Senior (15 17 years of age) athletes compete on the
same stage. It is seen as a critical element to retain the athletes in the
sport by providing an event that shares the arena with older athletes.
This event contains two points based competitions
in one a team event and an individual competition. Each competitor will compete in
three events only, so you can see there will be plenty of time to socialize and
meet competitors from other provinces.
Accommodation and food is always a
significant cost. We have investigated
several options at Secondary Schools with boarding facilities that are not too
distant from the competition venue. It is our preference for all athletes and
officials to be accommodated at the same venue. This provides greater
opportunity to meet your peers, improves communication and administration and
has enabled us to negotiate better rates for accommodation, meals, use of
facilities (such as the pool, gymnasium, fields and running track), disco and
prize giving facilities I am sure you will be impressed with the private
school facilities at Kings College in Otahuhu.
This year, the Auckland Province will
provide THREE teams competing as separate entities: Auckland, North Harbour and
Counties/Manukau.
We are delighted to also announce a
Senior Hot Meet (for athletes 18 years of age and above) is being integrated
into our programme an opportunity to see some of New Zealands senior athletes
competing.
The major planning and preparation
work is ahead of schedule and complete.
