24 Sept 2009 - AGM wrap up
A big thankyou to all of those members that turned up for the AGM. Especially to the younger female athletes who provided one of the highlights of the evening by voting for Leisha Neumann as their Club Captain. John Callesen remarked that this was the first vote in something like 16 years! A big thankyou to Brian Curry and his contribution to PNAHC who has stepped down as President. Brian is still very much involved with the children's athletic scene so we won't be losing his important skills. Good luck to Lance Gray who has willingly taken on the role. We wait with interest. Finally, the big moment of the night belonged to Alan Cherry whom the younger athletes seem to have adopted as evidenced by the photo above and made a life member of the club. Alan's nomination is above.

14 Sept - Marton to Wanganui Relay photos
After an exacting selection process eight mighty bucketheads dealt to the 10 leg, 66.3km Marton to Wanganui Relay, in 4h 51m 29s for 4th place. Hutt Valley Harriers sent something like five teams with their senior team winning in 4h 6m 50s. The course record is 3h 57m 47s set by Wanganui Harriers in 2006.

Troy Styles on his "hard" leg. Note to manager - get him a team singlet!
Leg 1: "DMan" Darren Gray led out for Palmy Bucketheads with a blistering 35min 7.8km leg down Tutaenui Rd to the handover with Craig McLean at Galpin Rd.
Leg 2: Craig then destroyed the field to the gasps of those at the changeover for the third leg overtaking up to five teams in compleing his 8.9km leg in 30m 41s. The photos prove he was flying. Only the "crack" Hut Valley Harrier team was left up the road.
Leg 3: Liam Woolford who answered the call for the relay without pause had a bit of struggle with this leg, 7.08km, described as "moderate" but had one too many hills for his liking but he got through with a bit of support in around 35min.
Leg 4: Troy was introduced to the club with a leg that we felt acknowleged his Christchurch club of Port Hills with a brute of a 6.93km climb! We parked up on the top of the hill and watched this figure power on up with lots of helpful support. Better him than us we all thought. Troy is returning for more punishment on the track so good on him. Our type of runner.
Leg 5: Oliver "Oman" McLean then took to the course like there was no tomorrow blitzing all before him in a leg that he thoroughly enjoyed in just over 20min.
Leg 6: Colin "I got a Gunn" took to his leg without complaint, and he shouldn't as it was completely flat, posing for any number of photographs along the way. Colin and Troy shared many a Christchurch memory so we all ended this trip just that much richer on the nuances of Cantabrians. Back to the racing...
Leg 7: Lance "I think I have got a niggle" chased without much impact Cameron McNaught up this short but steep 2.80 km leg to hand off to a pumped Craig McLean in 13min 30sec.
Leg 8: Craig then set off in pursuit of Cameron who would have gotten the fright of his life when Craig tore past him. To be fair to Cameron he was looking after his body for National Road Relays. Craig however was on fire for this 5.32km leg and gave a very relieved Lance a two minute headstart on the next Feilding Moa athlete.
Leg 9: Lance ran this 8.74km leg in near total anonymity along a very picturesque but rolling gravel road that follows the railway line for some distance. Due to stupidity he had left his time for leg 7 on his watch so was completely confused when the finish line never seemed to arrive in the calculated time of 36min. By the time he passed off to Gemma Dekker 49min had ticked off on his watch. Duh!
Leg 10: Gemma, after having to endure 4 and half hours of driving and bloke talk, finally got to show us her style, in this 5.80km leg, and ran the Palmy Bucketheads to a victory of sorts heading Rob Dabb into Wanganui by two minutes. Either by accident or design Feilding Moa, organised by Rob, put together a similar licorice allsorts team like the PNAHC bucketheads. We thought this mini-competition towards the end was a lot of fun. In summary a big thanks to our team that answered the call for this relay. Relays of this nature are a great way to involve new members in the club and to strengthen existing ties. Roger Morrison from Wanganui Harriers deserves congratulations for keeping things so straightforward and he certainly had the support of Wanganui mayor Michael Laws to whom Roger managed to give a $50 spot prize. Also for those train spotters out there Richard Willis, father of a certain Olympian was very pleasant company and thankyou to Andrus Lei of "Magic" for introducing me to him. Go the "Bucketheads!"
10 Sept - MWA Centre AGM

- Noo Samuel (left), pictured above with Ed Fern at the Palmerston North round of the central teams competition Nov 2008, was honoured at last nights meeting.
The MWA centre AGM was held last night in the Colin Gemmell room. Chaired by Fred Holmes it was a good opportunity to view the goodwill between Palmerston North and Wanganui and reflect on the significance of this co-operation which has allowed, in the younger age-groups, the MWA centre to compete with the likes of Auckland and Wellington. You realise that the success the region has experienced comes back to the voluntary efforts of a lot of people and that we need to celebrate what we have acheived and continue to work on the issues that will always be present. In particular the MWA centre can be proud of its 11 New Zealand representatives, the national and north island medalists and the continued efforts of our coaches and administrators.

After an exacting selection process the following 8 athletes will represent PNAHC on Saturday once they recover from twisted arm rash. Craig and Oliver McLean, Gemma Dekker, Liam Woolford, Colin Gunn, Darren Gray, Troy the vet and Lance Gray. Rain is forecast so it should be a fun day. Straws will be used to select those two lucky athletes that will run two legs!

7 Sept 2009 - New Zealand Road Championships ( 5 Sept) results
Craig McLean was PNAHC's sole representative at the New Zealand Road Championships in Dunedin at the weekend. Running in the 40-44 age group Craig ran a creditable 35m 06s for 11th place in his age group and 20th overall. Richard Bennett, Canterbury, ran 31m 32s to win placing him 9th overall. The road championships were raced over a 10km course consisting of seven road laps then finishing on the Caledonian athletics track. Former PNAHC athlete Kim Hogarth, now representing Athletics Nelson, continued his good form in winning his 5th senior mens national title this season in 30m 03s while Fiona Crombie, Canterbury, won the senior womens title in 35m 27s. Craig will now join seven other PNAHC and Feilding Moa athletes, running as Team Central, for the New Zealand Road Relay championships to be held on the rugged Takahe to Akaroa course in October. A junior women's team, also running as Team Central, will also be represented at this event.
29 Aug - Marton Wanganui Relay (12 Sep 2009)
PNAHC will look to put together a team (there are 10 legs) in the week leading up to this relay (67km) which we will treat a "club" event as a number of athletes will be away with other commitments. Regardless, Lance will be taking a car if we can find at least five athletes to form the minimum team. Please remember that the entry fee for this event is $15 on top of petrol (lots of spot prizes).
29 Aug 2009 - Noo Samuel's funeral
Noo Samuel's funeral was held in Wanganui on Wednesday and was attended by a number of PNAHC members. Please read Noo's obituary written by Alec McNab in the Wanganui Chronicle obituary.
29 Aug 2009 Craig McLean (pictured below) to run NZ Road Champs
Craig is not one to back down from a challenge as he takes on NZ's best in Dunedin next weekend over 10km. We wish him well.

23 Aug 2009 MWA Road Championships photos
Palmerston North Athletic and Harrier Club (PNAHC) fielded their strongest team in years to sweep the first four places in the senior mens section of the Manawatu Wanganui Centre Road Championships held in Wanganui East on Saturday 22 August. In capturing the first four places PNAHC also won the teams title. The team led by Andrew Davenport 35min 4 sec (42 years), Tim Carroll 35min 20 sec (40), Mark Searle 35min 54 sec (21) and Craig McLean 36min 4 sec (40) show that the strength in local distance running is clearly with the older athletes though Mark Searle is improving all the time. Andrew Davenport is off to Sydney for the World Masters Games in October to compete over his favoured distance the 800m while Tim Carroll, fresh from his win in the Manawatu Striders Half Marathon is also off to Australia to run the Sydney marathon in September. In the women's event Maria Bentley, also backing up from the half marathon, easily won her event finishing just behind the leading men in 6th place overall in a time of 36min 21sec.

21 Aug 2009 Butterfly Creek Nightime Madness
Sat 8 August: After earlier in the day running a fast 4.63km as an invited athlete in a winning Junior Women's team in the Wellington Round the Bays relay, Ariana Blackwood set off again on a 7.7km night-time headlamp run up the hills behind Eastbourne. Ariana and Dad Pete were meant to do this in the Young (Pete) and the Restless category, but Dad had nothing left after earlier running a better than expected 3.9km for his club of 20 years ago Aurora. Ariana joined up with Ariana Harper to come second Junior Mixed (M/M, M/F or F/F) just 46 seconds behind the winners (after a few extra detours in the dark). Crazy stuff but great fun; onwards to the track season!!!.

12 Aug 2009 - Tim Carroll's timetable
PNAHC "uber" diesel Tim Carroll (pictured below) has a busy schedule in front of him warming up with a local half mararthon this weekend, the MWA 10km road champs the following weekend (22 Aug), the Sydney Marathon on the 20th of Sept and finally the NZ Road Relay on 10th of October. Tim has recently completed some shorter races with the club which were a bit of a shock for someone who likes nothing more than a 36km Sunday run! Tim at present, from what I can work out, is the regions fastest marathoner with a best time of 2hrs 40 min so we are very happy to have him join us when he can. At least over 5km we might be able to get close to him.

12 Aug 2009 - Shaun McFarlane Prime Ministers Scholarship recipient
Shaun (pictured below) has received a Prime Ministers Scholarship to allow him to study his Bachelor of Sport and Exercise at Massey University. Shaun was telling me that he simply went through the Scholarships handbook and applied. Also helps to have represented New Zealand, won National Titles and be coached by one of New Zealand's best sprints coaches. The scholarship covers fees and a living allowance. We lose our best athletes every year to other universities so it is encouraging that this year we actually have our largest contingent of university students in the club: Jaimee Knyn, Mark Searle and Samantha Blanch.

12 Aug 2009 - Feilding Handicap Results results
An informal team of Mark Searle, Craig McLean, Tim Carroll, Daniel Pinkney and Lance Gray converged near Halcombe for Feilding Moas 7.2km handicap race. The course was basically a loop that climbed to a high point and with 2km to go you ran downhill to the finish. A fun course if you survive the climbing the hill. The race turned into a miniature centre road champs with most of the main contenders present. In particular we were all delighted to be able to put ourselves up against Paul McDermid who has done such good things on the cross country scene and he didn't disappoint by winning by 14 seconds over our own Mark Searle. A superb day with views to the Ruahines and an excellent feed at the Halcombe Hall. This week the team is going to complete a classic George McConachy training session for the 10,000m in preparation for the official centre road champs on the 22nd of September.
7 Aug 2009 - Oceania Regional Champs
New Zealand finished third in the junior 4 x 100m relay. The team of Michael Cochrane, Scott Burch, Regan Standing and Clayton Mbofana recorded 43.64s.
7 Aug 2009 - BBQ person required for Track Season

Congratulations to Olivia Burne (pictured below) for her 3rd place at New Zealand Cross Country Championships in the womens 19 event. This follows her win at New Zealand Secondary Schools in June. From a local perspective congratulations to Wendy Cottrell-Teahan (Feilding Moa) for her third placing in the womens 35-39 age group and Paul MacDermid (Feilding Moa) for his 2nd placing in the mens 35-39 age group. Finally congratulations to Kim Hogarth for his potential selection in the New Zealand cross country team by virtue of finishing 4th (3rd New Zealander) in the senior mens race. Kim who now lives in Nelson was easily PNAHC and this regions most outstanding male distance runner during his time in Palmerston North.

15 July 2009 - Halcombe Relay photos results
After a very successful team approach to the MWA centre cross country championships a similar approach to the Halcombe Road Relay was also undertaken. In the absence of George, who was working on the behalf of the IAAF in Brisbane, two teams PNAHC "A" & "B" were organised amongst myself, Craig McLean and Callum McConachy. PNAHC had never entered a team before so this was new territory for us. Given the excitement among those who participated I am sure we will have another go next year. A big thanks to Melanie and Phillipa for driving support.

Daniel Pinkney giving it "death"
When the idea for the Halcombe Relay was floated I thought we would struggle to field a single team of 6 blokes given that Andrew Davenport was running for "Bush" (because quite reasonably, he always had done so) and Liam Riley was injured. My thanks to these two for getting me a spot in the "A" team which I really appreciate! Anyway we assembled at Halcombe Hall and PNAHC "B" of Callum McConachy, Darren Gray, Scott Burch, Daniel Churchill, Nathan Pinkney and Liam Woolford sorted their running order out with a projected time submitted by myself based on 5min kms as I had no idea actually who would be running. Just a promise by Callum that he would rustle up a few blokes.
Well PNAHC "B" stormed around the course and were the first team of any sort home so they were justifiably proud of themselves. They then had a 20 minute wait for PNAHC "A". We need to get a bit more creative with names like the motormoas or flymoas from Feilding. PNAHC "A" were led off superbly by our newest recruit Tim Carroll who got the opportunity to measure himself against Andrew Davenport who posted the fastest times for not only leg 1 but also leg 5. Tim kept Andrew in sight the entire way so there was no panic in the team as Keith Webb picked up the "imaginary baton" for Leg 2 which incidentally he ran the fasted leg. Well done Keith we knew this was just the leg for you.
At the Leg 3 changeover Mark Searle quickly passed "Bush" and built a lead that was never relinquished though Nick Berry from Wanganui absolutely "caned" this leg and smashed at least 30 seconds off John Mudgway's previous record. Mark wasn't to be disgraced and handed over to a very hyped Daniel Pinkney who responded with the fastest time for Leg 4. When I was tagged to run Leg 5 the competition was nowhere in sight.
The Craig McLean support vehicle was our secret weapon. After the start of each leg we would drive to around halfway on the leg, stop, and giving rousing to support as our athlete ran by. We would then jump back in the car and give similar support as we went past to the next leg changeover. This is something I suspect the other teams were doing which made for great fun. Leg 5 was different because as soon as my rowdy support wagon went past I did not see them again till the finish. I must admit I kept looking to see for them but this leg is on a narrow gravel road and I spent much of my time waving vehicles past me. The hill was brutal and way more difficult than I wanted to believe. By the time I got near the finish I was back to a full head of steam and got to put in the traditional sprint finish to tag Craig McLean for the glory leg to which he responded with the fastest time.
All of the way around we were aware that we should go close to the course record held by Wanganui with our team of "diesels". No stars, no 15min 5km runners, just a champion team. Well when Craig hit the winners tape we found that we were 25 seconds short of the course record. Disappointed? Not at all - more incentive next year to come back and have another go. A big thanks to everyone who brought vehicles and helped get everyone to the start line and to Rob Dabb and Feilding Moa for organising an event that epitomises the best of what provincial New Zealand athletics has to offer.

Manawatu Wanganui Centre Cross Country Champs 2009
Two years ago on the same course PNAHC found themselves the only contestants in the Senior Mens events which was a strange but still satisfying way to win the championship. This year PNAHC fielded two teams PNAHC "A" & "B" original names eh! PNAHC "A" comprised Andrew Davenport, Mark Searle, Keith Webb and Lance Gray. PNAHC "B" comprised Daniel Pinkney, Darren Gray, Callum McConachy, and Scott Burch. Yes that is not a misprint. Scott who races over 400m for New Zealand took one for the team to race 12km over what was definitely a challenging course for Scott. While Feilding Moa took the first two places (Paul McDermid & Steve Stannard) PNAHC collected places 3rd (Anderw Davenport),4th (Keith Webb),5th (Mark Searle) & (Lance Gray) 6th to take out the teams title once again. The course itself had a "mean" hill at halfway but the in saying that it made for a great tactical battle. With Mark Searle's engagement party not far away we missed the aftermatch but we can only thank Levin Harriers for a well organised day out.

29 June 2009 - PNth athletes feature at Wellington Marathon Palmerston North athletes featured across the marathon, half marathon and 10km races held at Wellington in the weekend in cold but fair conditions. In the half-marathon walk Palmerston North Athletic & Harrier Club (PNAHC) athletes Andrus & Michelle Lei won the mens and womens races in times of 1hr 59min 12sec and 2hrs 4mins 36secs respectively. In the mens 10 km race PNAHC athletes Craig McLean 35min 50sec and Lance Gray 38min 8sec secured 1st and 3rd places in the 40-49 age group capping an excellent day of performances. Manawatu Triathlon Club member Blair van-Stipriaan finished 3rd to five time winner Grant McLean in a time of 2hrs 49min 28secs while UCOL lecturer Maria Bentley continued her impressive form in winning the womens half marathon by 3mins from Wellington's Vicki Humphries in a time of 1hr 18min 9secs.
25 June 2009 - NZ Sec Schools Cross Country results
Congratulations to Olivia Burne representing Palmerston North Girls High School in winning the Senior Girls by 3 seconds from Nicki McFadzien of Villa Maria College in a time of 13.44 for 4000m. Kate Spencer also representing PNGHS just missed the podium with an excellent 4th placing for 3000m in a time of 10.37. This would be a good time on the track so I think some arm twisting is required here! Other significant results include two of PNAHCs best young athletes Stepanie Dickins 12th and Ariana Blackwood 33rd in the Junior Girls event. In a very competitive Senior Boys race Liam Riley ran for 65th place which shows us the standard required. The commitment to running by the various schools is fascinating to see. A school such as Auckland Grammar sent 55 students all of the way to Nelson suggests that this is important to that school. Other schools such as Christhchurch Boys High School sent 34 athletes. By comparison Palmerston North Boys High School sent 12 and Freyberg High School sent 5 athletes. The school in the region that really set the standard was Wanganui Collegiate with 35 athletes. They were also duly rewarded with team wins in the Junior Girls, a 2nd in the Senior Girls featuring Caroline Mellsop in 15th place, and 5th in the very competitive senior boys event.

Well done to Liam Riley (PNBHS)- pictured below- (winner Senior Boys) who has trained and raced with the club over the last 12 months. His recent success is no surprise given his commitment to training. Congratulations must also go to Olivia Burne (PNGHS - Senior Girls) for another outstanding effort as well as Stephanie Dickins (FHS - Junior Girls) who posted a faster time than the intermediate girls winner. Well done to other other club members such as Maddy Win (2nd Senior Girls - PNGHS), Paige Lowe (3rd Senior Girls - Freyberg), Rachel Williamson (3rd Intermediate Girls - Freyberg) Joshua Baan (3rd Junior Boys - PNBHS) and Keiran Clark 3rd (Intermediate Boys - St Peters). Lance Gray is organising an eight man team from PNAHC and Rob Dabb is sounding out Feilding Moa athletes to compete as a composite team at National Roads. The confirmed team so far is: Lance Gray, Darren Gray, Craig McLean, Mark Searle and Rob Dabb. This leaves currently three spots open. On the PNAHC side of things we are sounding out Andrew Davenport, Tim Carroll and Stephen Smith. If push comes to shove and we end up with a selection quandry it will come down to who comes up first with the $100 deposit. Given the great opportunity for injury and changes to life circumstances (i.e crises) a certain amount of flexibility will be appreciated. Text Lance on 027 6788 284 if you have questions. Eight return plane tickets have been purchased leaving Fri 9 Oct 1.10pm returning 8.40am Sun 11 Oct. Cost $238 per athlete. Looking at a total cost of around $325 - $350 not including meals.

28 April - ANZAC Relay PNAHC report photos
Another excellent start to the cross-country season though PNAHC did not come home with a customary title. The strength of the teams this year was very impressive with the Feilding Moa "Womens" team sorting out their selections to take out the trophy. PNAHC had to be content with 4th place though Lorraine Berry nearly snatched 3rd place on the final lap. Gemma Atkinson must not be forgotten in the scratch race and is always turning up to race with great enthusiasm. In the mens grade Wanganui and Hawera were clearly the teams to beat and did not disappoint with a fine race at the end between Jason Cressingham and Tom Osborne. The race for PNAHC was between the A & B teams with the first leg between Craig McLean and Keith Webb picking up from where they left off on Tuesday night at Ongley Park. Callum McConachy professed a lack of training and getting married as possible excuses before his race but the lack of real hill was the only way he was going to lose to Lance Gray on the second leg and so it turned out. Scott Burch is enjoying his time as a distance runner but complained bitterly about the lack of markings and the hassles of running on grass and mud and trees and ....(we get the picture Scott!). Daniel Churchill gave a great effort for the "B" team and is chafing at the bit to tackle Hughes Memorial.

28 April - ANZAC Relays (report from ANZ website)
The Manawatu Wanganui Centre Cross Country season started with the traditional ANZAC Relays held over a four person 2km course at Wanganui High School. In the Women's race, Wanganui Collegiate led early with National W19 Steeplechase Champion Caroline Mellsop opening up a big lead. Eventual winners Feilding Moa eroded this lead by lap two , and took control over the next two laps and were never in danger of losing, winning by a margin of 1m 23s. Wanganui Collegiate consolidated their second placing, and the Wanganui Harrier Club were third . In winning the women's race, Feilding Moa broke a six year stranglehold that Palmerston North had in winning the race. Mellsop had the fastest time of 7 m 49 s with second fastest being Wendy Cottrell-Teahan 8 m 3s. In the m en ' s race, a much closer race saw Hawera Harriers and Athletics Wanganui battle it out, after Cameron McNaught had given Feilding Moa the early lead. After the lead changed several times, it came down to the final lap with Tom Osborne chasing down Hawera's Jason Cressingham. Osborne eventually closed the gap, and ran away to give Athletics Wanganui it's first win in more than twenty years. Hawera were second only seven seconds in arrears, and Palmerston North finished third . The fastest times went to Osborne with 6 m 27 s and Cressingham 6 m 37 s.

22 April 2009 PNAHC Winter Programme download
Please note that PNAHC presently does not host local harrier club "races" because we are so well served by Rob Dabb and his team at Feilding Moa see website http://www.harriersnz.350.com/Club_Calender.htm for further details. We encourage any athlete to take advantage of the excellent local races Feilding Moa organise.
What PNAHC does offer though are regular training opportunities each day of the week with the Ongley Park session on Tuesdays a particular highlight. After hosting 6 months of Tuesday nights at the Athletics Track our focus for Winter is very much on travelling around the lower half of the North Island and measuring ourselves against the best. The Dorne Cup on June 13 at Trentham is an excellent example where you get to rub shoulders with the big guns and see what is humanly possible in a pair of spikes - 85th place here is not a bad result in a field of 200!

In finishing order Andrew Davenport 50.08 (2nd), Strahan Moynihan 51.09 (3rd) Craig McLean 51.51 (6th) Lance Gray 54.23 (11th) and Daniel Pinkney 1.09.34 (25th) were the five PNAHC representatives. Good signs for the season, we hope, especially in the masters ranks. Richard Day in 47.33 showed what is possible on that trail. Great to see a field of 71 athletes and thanks to Ian Carter and his team for their organisation of this event.

17 April Sports Club of the year award nominations nomination
Sport Manawatu have opened nominations for sports club of the year award. The category that jumps out for PNAHC is easily player development (read athlete development) given our focus on local and national championship events with PNAHC athletes such as Courtney Walker, Stephanie Dickins, Ariana Blackwood, Shaun McFarlane, Olivia Burne and now Scott Burch getting the opportunity to travel overseas and represent NZ. Someone though needs to take Scott for a tour of the South Island first!

15 April 2009 Hastings Half Marathon (5 Apr 2009) results
Notable that Craig McLean and Mark Searle took 2nd and 3rd place in times of 1.18.52 and 1.19.43. Craig took out the first Ongley Park threshold session yesterday in a time of 26min 36sec with Lance Gray holding off Keith Webb for 2nd in 27min 58 sec & 27min 59 secs respectively. While not strictly a race there is a lot of pride at stake! We had six senior runners yesterday which bodes well for the possibility of putting together a relay team.
