A special thanks to St Peters College who ran a surperb event and to all of the PNAHC club members who were involved. Down where I was camped at the start line a special thanks to Callum McConachy who stepped in at the last moment as starter. Also not to forget Shaun McFarlane who spent his entire day teaching block starts and never once lost his patience. While Callum may have issued more yellow cards than that awful Australian ref on Friday night there was only one disqualification. While some may not have appreciated Callum's attention to starting detail they will thank him when they get to any national events in the future because they will know exactly what is expected of them.

6 Mar 2009 - Scott Burch destroys Awatapu records
In a Jesse Owens like performance Scott Burch has blitzed the Awatapu records for each of his races. His results were (hand timed) 21.5 (200m), 2.05 (800m) 49.5 (400m) and 10.8 (100m). A nice touch was the presence of Craig Purdy who was on hand to congratulate Scott in beating his old mark of 52 seconds for the 400m.

Congratulations to Robb Dabb for a well organised event that deserves greater attention from the running public. The weather on the Saturday may have put some off but by Sunday morning conditions were perfect for running. The men's half was won by Gavin Spiers in 1.14.48 with notable NZ triathlete Shane Reed second place in 1.15.23 followed by the well performed Tim Carroll (1.19.58) who was warming up for the Mountain to Surf marathon (New Plymouth) this weekend. In the 10km it was a battle of the oldies with Craig McLean (40) winning easily in 36.05 followed by Lance Gray (39) in 38.35 and Wendy Cottrell-Teahan (age witheld) 3rd in a time of 39.05.

21 Feb 2009 - Hayden Donnelly leaves for University
Hayden Donnelly left Palmerton North this morning for Otago University where he will study Health Sciences. We have been blessed over the years to have had quality athletes such as Hayden represent the Manawatu but we have also gotten used to losing them to new opportunities as well. Hayden is a fine young man who reflects everything that is good about athletics and athletes in general. It is no surprise that Hayden is also an exellent student or that he can equally turn his hand to tennis and swimming but it is as a runner that we loved his presence most.

Hayden at ANZAC relays 2008
In particular Hayden loved training and was up for anything that usually Callum McConachy could dream up. The goal of athletes is to win titles and Hayden is no different. Winning the 2008 NZ Secondary Schools 800m title, representing PNBHS, with the assistance of long-time coach George McConachy capped off a fine career in secondary schools athletics. We know we have been fortuntate in having Hayden around and wish him well and hope to see him at "Nationals".

Feilding Ribbon Day Sun 15 Feb 10am
FEILDING'S RIBBON DAY is to be held 10:00am, Sunday 15th February at Timona Park, Feilding - access is either via Simon Street (off Kimbolton Road) or Campbell Street (off East Street). All club members are invited. Can you please tell any others that you are aware off that either do not have emails or are not listed here. It would pay to be there by 9.30-9.45 latest to get a good spot under the trees. We will also have to help organise one or two events, so it would be appreciated if parents can help out for a short while - it hopefully should not be too onerous as several people are expected to be there. I'm sorry we are away in Hamilton, but Steve Clark will be there.

1 Feb 2009 U14 & U16 Interprovincials - Inglewood - Report
A team of 12 athletes represented the MWA region at the 14/18 Interprovincials held in Inglewood , Sat 24th Jan. The team managed a 4th placing in the 14yr teams event with all athletes competing to the best of their abilities to gain valuable team points. Adam Miller competed as an U18 individual and was unlucky to miss out on a top 3 placing. Highlights included Bradley Proutings javelin throw of 40.55m and Jezreel Nelsons 100m. After competing in very hot conditions the team went to a river nearby followed by a late night of socializing at St Mary's boarding school in Stratford. Thanks to Rosemary & Jen Fee for organizing transport, accommodation and gear. Cheers Steve Clark.

31 Jan 2009 - Craig McLean takes out Parkvale 10km
Craig took it easy on us at club night last Tuesday for good reason having cracked out a 36 min 8 sec 10km in a very hot Wairarapa. Just behind Carterton in fact. Andrew Davenport who finished 2nd makes a point of competing in these very well run and competitive events and is a good person to talk to if you are keen for something different. Craig McLean is an elusive character but I am sure we will get a photo of him shortly. Craig is a recent arrival to the PNAHC "scene" and is very keen on organising a mens relay team. Craig is also running the Buller half on the 14th of February while his brother Grant will be contesting the marathon.

Impressive 2km mens field on Tuesday clubnight showing the possibility of putting together a road relay team. At the front Andrew Davenport and Hayden Donnelley battled out a good race in very windy conditions with Hayden taking the honours in 6.08. Others in the field included Daniel Pinkney, Strahan Moynihan, the ever improving Mark Searle, new man Keith, Craig McLean and making sure no one was lonely at the back Lance Gray. An impressive effort with the entire field finishing under 7mins.

Olivia Burne on the way to a then PB over 1500m at Inglewood.
I won't attempt a full review of the NZ Secondary Schools competition but congratulations to the medal winners. In particular the editor would like to congratulate Hayden Donnelly (PNBHS) who was expected to win the 800m and no doubt was feeling the weight of expectations. Those of us lucky to be present during his training sessions could only marvel at the 1.21's for 600m he was cranking out on a regular basis. Congratulations to Olivia Burne (PNGHS) who has been running superbly of late and took an axe to the Manawatu and PNAHC 3000m record with 9.35.11. Let us not forget the superb time of 4.31 for 3rd place in the 1500m final which was another personal best as well as a 2nd place in the 3km road race. Also congratulations to Andy Kruy (Freyberg) for the silver in the long jump with 6.73m and Stephanie Dickins who backed up a busy Pacific School Games with a 3rd place in the 3km road race behind none other than Olivia Burne. Also Scott Burch (Awatapu) who managed to avoid serious injury on his way to 3rd over 400m in 48.75sec.

NZ Sec Schools Athletics - Hamilton (13-14 Dec)
The New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Championships to be held at Porritt Stadium in Hamilton this weekend are regarded by athletes as the best athletics competition held in New Zealand. The reason for this is simply that athletics participation is at its peak in secondary school without the distractions of employment, university, family responsibilities and travel. For those athletes from the Manawatu region at various secondary schools who happen to also compete for PNAHC - go hard. And for Scott Burch - don't go jumping any more fences!

Highlights for the Manwatu/PNAHC contingent have obviously been the personal bests recorded by Stephanie Dickins (2.18.38) and Courtney Walker (2.22.97) in the 800metres. It is notable that Stevie Paine who competes at MCAT regularly won the Girls 13 800m (2.14.87). Stephanie went on to contest both the 800m and 400m finals finishing fourth place each time. Stephanie also ran three sub 60 sec 400m races (59.83, 59.07, 59.77) to show her consistency. Also we must not forget Ariana Blackwood who worked hard to qualify across a number of events and threw a 32.96m discus for 10th out of 19th for her best result in Canberra after a hard 2000m steeples.

23 Oct - Club Night Roundup
Given the rain the camera was tucked safely away but the weather did not detract from some excellent competition at four levels. The first level is within the age-group comprising three athletes who will be representing NZ at the Pacific Schools Games in Canberra late November. The competition between Ariana Blackwood, Stephanie Dickins & Courtney Walker is worth coming to club-night on its own as they prepare for Australia. Second there is the sprint competition among the senior women led by Jaimie Knyn closely followed by Gemma Lewis. Then there is the testosterone led notably by Scott Burch, Hayden Pritchard, Hayden Donnelly and Callum McConachy (who has enough for all of us). Finally there is good competition developing in distance runnning with the return of Katrina Gemmell in the senior women as well as the development of Cameron McNaught, Liam Riley and Mark Searle in the mens to push the old-timer Andrew Davenport. These are exciting times with Shaun McFarlane returning from India and even Darren Gray being spotted out there training. Finally the response from children and parents has been amazing even on this wet and miserable day.

The opening club night, track programme only, was a great success. The wind dropped and conditions were good for racing; shown by the 11.0 (hand timed) for the 100m by Scott Burch. He followed this with a 50.9 in the 400m moments later. In the women we saw good early performances from Stephanie Dickins over 400m and Courtney Walker in the 1500m. The evening was best illustrated by Brienna (5 years), pictured below, who ran the 60, 100 & 400m with at least a couple of warm up laps thrown in as well.

While PNAHC did not field a team it is still worthwhile to see what we could aspire to. As an aside, former PNAHC athlete Kim Hogarth running the penultimate leg for the victorious Canterbury University team ran his leg over a minute quicker than the likes of Grant McLean & Ryan Sissons suggesting he is racing seriously again which is great to see.
6 Oct- Shaun McFarlane to Youth Commonwealths
Shaun left for Pune - India, yesterday, to attend the III Youth Commonwealth Games over the 200m and two relays. Shaun's preparation has been a real team effort with contributions from many people in the Manawatu athletics community. You can follow Shaun McFarlane's progress at the following website address:

11 Aug - "The Dam Block
photos
The "Official PNAHC" Dam Block starts from the athletics track and is generally run in a clockwise direction along Old West Rd, Turitea Rd, Greens Rd, Kahuterawa Rd, Old West Rd and home. This generally gives you a much longer hill run workout and in my opinion it is safer coming down-hill along Kahuterawa Rd facing the traffic.

Always plenty of friends on the Dam Block!
There is a strong unofficial history associated with the "Dam Block" and you get the sense that it has been the staple for the regions best distance athletes. While not recently measured with any degree of accuracy it is generally regarded as being around 20km. An unofficial race amongst three "average" club members saw a race time of 1hr 20 mins. Average training times tend to be in the region of 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

Congratulations to the PNAHC and Manawatu/Wanganui athletes who competed at the NZ Cross Country Championships held at Waikanae. In particular Olivia Burne who placed 6th in the W19 grade as well as Rachel Southee who finished 39th in W16. Andrew Davenport finished a creditable 11th in the M40-44 grade. From a regional perspective there were impressive performances from Stephanie Dickins (Feilding Moa) in the W14 grade with a 3rd placing, while Wendy Teahan (Feilding Moa) was 2nd in the W35-39 grade. Also a welcome back to competition from injury to Ariana Blackwood (PNAHC) who competed in the W19 grade for 26th place. Getting to the start line was an impressive effort in itself. Well done.

Congratulations to John Kendall (pictured above) for his silver (long jump 6.62m) and bronze (triple jump 13.06m) at the Ocenia Championships, 25-28 June 2008, in the Mariana Islands. These results are no suprise given the preparation we saw firsthand at the track between John and his coach PNGHS teacher Anne Thomson.

Callum McConachy - Not your average running build!
If you ask members of the PNAHC team that competed at this year's North Island Cross Country their personal highlight they are more likely to remember the drive home more than anything else! This is no reflection on the superb annual event at Spa Park Taupo but rather a case of the weather simply taking over. Compared to the hail and snow storms gripping Palmerston North the weather in Taupo was typical for the middle of winter: cold but pleasant. The extent of the southerly was evident when we arrived in Turangi on our return to find all of the roads south closed. George bought a map for the coming cross-country tiki tour but fortunately the National Park road opened: thanks for the text Pete Blackwood, and off we went.

The first snow fight occurred at the National Park petrol station and quickly indicated that Paige was everyone's favourite target! After a brief detour to Raetihi we headed back towards Waiouru, where at a stoppage for the road to be cleared, the second snow fight commenced. Peace finally broke out with the construction of a snowperson. South of Waiouru we knew we would make it home that day which was never guaranteed. A big thanks to George as always for safely negotiating the roads though the younger ones may disagree with his choice of Roy Orbison as sing along music.
25 June Manawatu's latest New Zealand representatives!!
Congratulations to Courtney Walker, Stephanie Dickins and Ariana Blackwood for their selection in the New Zealand team for the Pacific Schools Games in Canberra from 30 Nov to 6 Dec.

From left: Courtney, Stephanie & Ariana
Courtney Walker - 800m (PB 2.24.21) Courtney's selection comes on the back of a 3rd placing at the North Island Secondary Schools Track & Field Championships as well as a strong performance at the Freyberg High School Cross-country and NZ Secondary Schools Cross-Country. Her first year in track and field has been very successful.
Stephanie Dickins
800m (PB 2.22.04), 400m (PB 60.33), 4x100 relay. Stephanie is currently the NZ Cross-Country title holder and the Manawatu Secondary Schools Cross-Country title holder. Along with a 2nd placing over 800m at the North Island Secondary Schools Track & Field Championships Stephanie has had an excellent year of running. Her selection over three events provides a great opportunity to show her abilities.
Ariana Blackwood Javelin (PB 29.819), Discus (PB 34.88), 2km Steeples (7.53.37). Ariana has previously represented NZ at the 2005 Pacific School Games held in Melbourne. Ariana has bettered the Australian qualifying mark for the 2km steeples for the Pacific School games seven times and holds the three fastest times in NZ this season! She went under the Wellington 1km Steeplechase record by an astonishing 13 seconds! Her best discus throw came at the PNAHC hosted Pacific Schools qualifying event back on the 10th of April while her Javelin effort came at the North Island Secondary Schools T & F Champs. All three young woman have thoroughly earned their selection with consistent performances throughout both track and cross-country seasons and we wish them well at Canberra.

Stephanie Dickins - Wins New Zealand Title!!
Given this was the NZ National Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships there were Palmerston North athletes represented across a number of schools. In particular Freyberg High School, PNBHS, PNGHS and Feilding High School. George McConachy director of the Freyberg High School Sports Academy invited me to drive a mini-bus as well as take some photographs. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly Stephanie Dickins' (pictured below), representing Feilding High School, win in the Year 9 girls over 3km in 11min 34sec. Stephanie runs for both Feilding Moa Harrier Club and PNAHC and we are all understandably very happy with her performance. Stephanie tracked the front group before breaking away on the final climb to the finish.

Similarly the Palmerston North athletics community are very proud of Olivia Burne's, representing PNGHS, 2nd place effort in the Senior Girl's race over 4km. Expectations were high for Olivia given her win last year but last years 7th place finisher Hannah Newbould from Cashmere High School won on the day. Both Olivia and Hannah were team-mates at this years World Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships.

For Freyberg High School the stand out performances were from Courtney Walker (19th) and Rachel Williamson (26th) in the Year 9 Girls race. Courtney Walker has special reason to be proud of her efforts given her selection along with Stephanie Dickins and Ariana Blackwood for the up-coming Pacific School Games. Other Palmerston North athletes to feature included Shaun O'Neil annd Liam Reilly representing PNBHS.

- Dorne Cup Wrap-Up resultphoto
It was a balmy day at Trentham with the conditions more like summer than winter. The PNAHC team for this race was particularly hit with injuries and other commitments but those that made the effort got to see a great course and excellent competition. Rachel Williamson led off for PNAHC and placed 11th in the Womens 16 race. Paige Lowe 21st and Maddy Winn 22nd put in good efforts also Womens 16 years while Liam Reilly 15th had a good run in the Mens 19 years. Daniel Churchill found the course much more to his liking after Hawera placing 23rd in the Boys 13 years. Hayden Donnelley joined Callum McConachy in the Open race and placed 38th & 46th respectively. The day was concluded at George's sisters' place in Waikanae for pikelets and coffee which was most appreciated.

- Hughes Memorial (Hawera) Wrap- Up photos
A quality PNAHC team assembled for this race at the early hour of 8.30am at George's place for what was best described as a very relaxed journey. This is in complete contrast to last year where we were held up and the abiding memory is of Sarah Brooks completing her warm-up alongside the state highway as we waited for an accident to be cleared! Thankfully they held the start for us but this year we wanted to walk the course first!

Gemma Dekker (pictured above) in her first cross-country outing for the club thoroughly enjoyed herself and was not in least bothered by the hills. Gemma has been improving every week around Ongley park with today illustrating her improvement. The biggest smile of the day came from Rachel Williamson (pictured below) who was very excited to find herself on the podium behind the Feilding Moa pair of Stephanie Dickins and Eilsyn Burney but just ahead of the familiar face of Ariana Blackwood. Paige Lowe was also not far away in 6th place. In the boys 16 years Daniel Churchill had a day best described as character building but he seemed to cheer up pretty quickly. We have all been there!

Rachel Williamson 3rd Girls 16.
The race of the day however was the women's race between Olivia Burne and Renee Graham (Energy City - New Plymouth). The pair put 2 1/2 minutes on the field with Olivia winning eventually by 2 seconds! In the same race Lorraine Berry came 4th overall but 2nd in the women's 35-39 age-group. In a similar vein the mens race was dominated by Jason Cressingham who cleared out from the start line and put 1 3/4 minutes on the field over 8km! Andrew Davenport was 5th overall but won the mens's 40-44 age-group. Callum McConachy ran a creditatble 19th (though 4th overall in the senior mens category) and was rightly pleased with himself after last year's effort.
23 May - On the Wings of Mercury Book Review
Introduction:
Lorraine Moller's autobiography is superb reading for adults giving great insight into a New Zealander who achieved much more than the sporting public will probably ever appreciate. The New Zealand sporting public would probably regard Allison Roe and Rod Dixon as our greatest ever marathoners given their respective victories at the 1981 and 1983 New York City marathons. How many people remember Lorraine Moller's Boston Marathon victory in 1984?
The New Zealand public were left deflated as our hero Allison Roe dropped out and the lesser publicity vehicle of Lorraine Moller won. When you read Lorraine 's book she has no issue with Allison Roe, as you might suspect, simply because she was not on the marathoning scene long enough. The athlete who truly got under her skin was Anne Audain who she perceived to ursurp her deserved glory at crucial points! read further

Congratulations to the 450 athletes respresenting 15 secondary schools who competed at the Foxton course on Wednesday. In the teams competition PNBHS completed a clean sweep of the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Boys' competitions. In the women's competition George's crack team at Freyberg won the Junior Women's title while PNGHS won the Intermediate and Senior Girls' titles.
The most impressive performance of the day was junior women runner Stephanie Dickins representing Feilding High School who beat Olivia Burnes' junior record on this course. Not to be over shadowed Olivia Burnes then destroyed the senior field in setting a new senior record. Strahan Moynihan representing Freyberg won the Intermediate Boys closely followed by Shaun O'Neill of PNBHS. Non PNAHC athletes who stood out and would be most welcomed down at track would be PNBHS athlete George Alemu who won the Senior Boys title and Freyberg's Samuel Hughes who won the Junior Boys title. Danielle Welby who won the Intermediate Girls title for Waiopehu would also be welcomed.
14 May - John Kendall selected for New Zealand
John Kendall has been selected to represent New Zealand in the Long Jump and Triple Jump at the Ocenia Championships, 25-28 June 2008, on the Mariana Islands. If you look on Google Earth you can see that describing the Mariana Islands as exotic is a fair description given that it is in the Philippine Sea south of Japan and east of the Philippines!
11 May - Hastings Steeples Wrap-Up results
This years event was notable for the moment of silence observed by officials and athletes for the passing of local and national walking identity Jack Tregurtha. George, at the always lavish afternoon tea, summed up Jack with a story where Jack aged 70 rang up Sport Radio and recounted how the previous day he had walked faster over 3km than three All Blacks, including one Jonah Lomu, had run in their training camp. Making the none too subtle point that the All Blacks are never as fit as they think are.

George McConachy & Allan Potts
On the competition front we welcomed a new bloke: Shaun O'Neill who grabbed second place on the finish line in the M16 race while we welcomed back Ariana Blackwood who also finished second in her race. Good performances from all who travelled such as Rachel Southee, Paige Lowe, Leisha Neumann, Maddy Win, Rebecca O'Hagen and Daniel Churchill. photos
11 May - Jack Tregurtha NZ Walking Expert dies
New Zealand walking stalwart and rules expert Jack Tregurtha of Hastings passed away last evening (Thursday) after a short illness. Tregurtha, aged 71, was the president of Athletics Hawkes Bay Gisborne as well as secretary of the centre.

He was the guru of racewalking in New Zealand, organising the national 50km walking championships in the Hawkes Bay each year. He kept meticulous records of walking events and individual records and produced and published an informative magazine/newsletter 'Race Walking Contact' throughout the year. He was a keen walking competitor, setting a New Zealand M60 50km record of 5h 52m 7s in 1997 and he still holds the New Zealand 24 hour walking record for M60 of 153.670km. Tregurtha won numerous New Zealand age group walking titles.

Constitutions were Tregurtha's forte and he was currently in the process of re-writing his centre's constitution. He knew the Athletics New Zealand constitution and rules of competition backwards and he was always a vocal and at times entertaining speaker during any debate on the constitution and rules at Athletics New Zealand annual general meetings.

He was a committee member of the Hastings athletic club and club president Allan Potts said that he will be sadly missed. "Jack was our photofinish expert, carrying out that role at Nelson Park for many years," said Potts. Tregurtha's expertise in photofinishing was sought outside his centre being called on to officiate at the IAAF Area Permit meeting at Waitakere in February.

Tregurtha, a civil engineer, settled in the Hawkes Bay some 20 years ago after previously living in Wellington and Canterbury. (courtesy of Athletics New Zealand)

4 May - Katrina Gemmell & Kate Forrest 13th & 14th at Rotorua

While it was no surprise that Katrina ran a respectable 3.19.26 around the Rotorua course on what she describes as limited training; Kate's effort of a 3.20.06 on 10 mins of jogging but lots of cycling and swimming hints at the talented runner that she is. Kate represented NZ as a junior at world cross-country so her time is no surprise. What is surprising is the lack of running preparation she has had due to a niggling injury.

While the weather was distinctly chilly the rain held off making for pleasant conditions for athletes. Spikes were compulsory with Callum proudly displaying his 15mm specimens. The beating heart selection policy was once again employed for the men given the need for six "man" teams. In particular a big thanks again to Colin Gunn for filling in for all of PNAHCs injured senior male runners. Thankyou Colin. Hayden Donnelly got to mix it up at the front with the big guns and certainly enjoyed the experience given his post race comments. Strahan Moynihan once again highlighted his improvement this year with a run only 30 seconds down on Hayden. Andrew Davenport was strong once again with good efforts from Michael Broughton and Callum McConachy. In the womens race it was a big welcome back for Rachel Southee sporting a healed broken collar-bone and gravel rash. Good to see Keeley once again on a cross-country course with good efforts from Lorraine Berry, Stacey Gunn, Courtney Walker, Rachel Williamson and Paige Lowe. Well done to Daniel Churchill for getting his "unofficial" lap in under the radar of officialdom. A big hand to the organisers too for running a fun run for the younger kids. They all gave the water jump plenty of attention!

Finally thanks to George for getting us all there and back again. I certainly appreciated the roast dinner later on.

Colin Gunn heading to the finish.

27 Apr - Athlete Profile - Katrina Gemmell athlete profile

Given Olivia Burnes' efforts it is timely that we got to see Katrina Gemmell in a PNAHC singlet for the first time in a decade at Anzac Relays. Back in the day Katrina was one of a very strong 4x400m team as well as "owning" the NZ Secondary School 800m title from 1995 to 1997. Katrina was recruited by Tulane University and has never looked back. Katrina is running the Rotorua Marathon this weekend in memory of her father Colin.

In summary the team of Katrina Gemmell, Courtney Walker, Rachel Williamson & Maddy Win won the senior women's title while the senior mens relinquished their title to Wanganui High School. The new course found favour with the athletes but the distance of 2.4km was a bit of a shock for the "trackies" after last years 1500m at Collegiate. Special mention to a number of people. First to Daniel Pinkney who warmed up for the day by biking in from Ashhurst (32mins), second to Colin Gunn & Daniel Churchill for their efforts in the scratch race, and finally to two of George's favourites: Katrina Gemmell & Kate Inwood. Katrina used Anzac Relays as a hit out for the Rotorua Marathon while Kate came across to provide support.
