Classics review by Alan Adamson - Sylvia Potts Classic -
Held at Hastings 29 January. It was great to see the Palmerston North singlet prominent at this meeting held in memory of Sylvia Potts. What may not be known is that Sylvia was a Palmerston North girl growing up close the where our track is located she was head prefect at Freyberg in 1960 and competed for our club until she left the city for university. The feature race of the meeting was the Memorial 800 race which saw our club well represented with 3 of the 16 starters. Steph Dickins ran an outstanding race to finish 6th with a time of 2.17.13 creating a new centre open record for her age and finishing ahead of some very prominent much older athletes . Ariana and Courtney also ran with distinction finishing 13th and 14th respectively. The club team looked very impressive taking out the 4x400 relay with Hayden Donnelly showing great fighting spirit to cut down the invitation team runner before handing over to Scott Burch who put in a 48 second final lap to bring the team home comfortable winners.

Cooks Classic held at Wanganui 26 January
A large number of club members competed at this event which was held in conjunction with the Young Olympians Camp. Wanganui does not appear to be a happy hunting ground for Jaimee Knyn who unfortunately found the hurdles a little unforgiving and suffered a quite nasty injury.Hope the recovery goes well Jaimee. If there was to be a positive for Jaimee it would be that the announcer got a lot closer to the correct pronunciation of her name than the Wellington effort. Some good sprinting by Simone and Vanessa who had a busy night running 4 events. Olivia a very solid run in the mile but was once again out sprinted in the home straight . Hardeep a good win in the Hammer. An outstanding 400 by Steph with her time of 58.91 being a centre record.

Capital Classic held in Wellington 22 January
With Nick Willis competing this drew one of the biggest crowds seen at a Wellington meeting for some time. Some exciting racing which got the crowd going. Olivia figuring in one of the closest finishes just loosing out to Barbara Roy in the 1500. Andreas ran a season best time in the 400 hurdles whilst Vanessa and Simone both recorded PB's in the 200 . Ariana was not overawed competing against former world champion Beatrice Faumuina and performed creditably in the Discus

11 - Colgate Games Review - Peter Blackwood
A small group of 10 athletes from Palmerston North Athletics Club punched above their weight, returning with 7 medals from the North Island Colgate Games. This competition was held at Mount Smart stadium at Auckland , with almost 1600 athletes producing some outstanding performances over the three days of the competition which started Friday 8 January. Stephanie Dickins was the club's top overall medallist winning medals in all four of her events. Dickins started with a dominant performance in the 14-year girls 400m, winning in 59.86 seconds. Dickins' other medals were silver in the 800 metres in 2:21.62 and a surprising silver in the 1500 metres in 5:01.87. In this event Dickins produced a tremendous burst over the final 300 metres to move from seventh to second at the finish. Dickins won bronze in the high jump with a leap of 1.49 metres.
Stephanie Dickins at Shaw Baton cross-country May 2009
Sisters Kara and Zia Macdermid ran excellent races in the 800 and 1500 metres events. Kara won the 12-year girls 1500 metres in a really outstanding 4:50.87, six seconds clear of Te Aroha's Meg Skilton. This was the fastest time across all female grades and was achieved after Kara put in a strong burst mid-race. Kara was also 3 rd in the 800 metres in 2:23.11. Zia Macdermid won silver in the 10-year girls 1500 metres in a superb time for her young age of 5:19.43 and was fourth in the 800 metres in 2:38.70, just 0.56s off bronze in that race.
Courtney Walker also performed highly and came very close to medalling in the 14-year girls 80 metres hurdles, coming fourth in a fast 13.38 seconds, just 7 hundreds of a second behind bronze medallist Rochelle Newdick of Papamoa, the sister of international decathlete Brent Newdick. Daniel Churchill finished seventh in the 13-year boys hurdles running 13.66s. Jack Cartridge is clearly a talented athlete for the future, with several good performances including 69.50s for the 11-year boys 400 metres. Gemma Decker with a throw of 22.71 metres in the discus and both Molly Noema-Barnett and Melissa Blackwood produced some fine throws in the younger grades. Erica Dekker, the youngest in the team performed well in the eight-year girls.

Callum McConachy 2nd (SM) and Ariana Blackwood 3rd (W16) competed with distinction at the North Island Combined Events at Hastings in the weekend. That PNAHC had two of the total of eight athletes competing is impressive and ties in with George's multi-event focus that we are currently aiming towards. Both athletes had many season bests over the weekend: Ariana with 8.64m in the shot-put, 32m in the Javelin, and 19.16sec in the 100mH. Callum had season bests with 11.13m shot, 33.28m in the discus, 37.46 in the Javelin, 3.20m in the Pole Vault, 1.66m in the High Jump and 5.67m in the long-jump.

Special Olympics: Ryan Smith

Regular Tuesday evening competitor Ryan Smith won three medals at the NZ Special Olympics held in Palmerston North. In a less than familiar event for him, he won the 800 metres. he resisted the sprinters urge to run like a bat out of hell from the gun and settled comfortably into 3rd place for the first lap, then unleashed a powerful surge with 300m to go to take the lead and win (you may have seen Ryan's picture on the front page of the Manawatu Standard on Friday 4th Dec after the win) In the 100m he deadheated for 2nd place in 12.45 sec ( a new PB) with Stephen Just of Hibiscus Coast. Kwame Williams-Accra from Wellington won in 12.06 sec. In the 200m this same trio thrashed it down the finishing straight neck and neck. Kwame got up to again take first place ina time of 25.52sec. Stephen Just and Ryan Smith were only separated by the photo finish camera by 1/100th of a second, 25.73s and 25.74s for Ryan. Again a new PB for Ryan who started the competition with a 26.26s best and finished over 1/2 second better - thats a huge improvement for any sprinter. While Ryans races were a local highlight, the level of competitiveness, sportsmanship and celebration from all the Special Olympics athletes was great to be a part of. Rob Dabb

30 Nov Central Region Teams Event - Wellington results
Anne Thomson (below) take a bow. I stole the following comment from Anne's email to me after she took the entire Manawatu team to Wellington at the weekend: "Athletes – a brilliant group to be with. What treasures!" Totally unsolicitied. Anne's comment is diametrically opposed to the disappointing events that led Anne to taking the team by herself; notably the inability of the athletics community in the lower half of the North Island to organise competition dates for the current season. Enough said.

Congratulations to Ian Carter and his team for their organisation of the North Island Masters event which despite the weather was a great success. The Colin Gemmell room's comfortable shelter was used to maximum effect and illustrated that for the majority of events held in Palmerston North the facility works superbly. A thankyou to all of the officials from Masters, PNAHC, Ashhurst and other clubs I have no doubt omitted. Now onto the Special Olympics ..

A big thankyou to all of those involved with the Carol McNie Memorial event with Wanganui, Hawera and Dannevirke athletes. Excellent photograph in the Manawatu Standard. Too many performances to mention. We were very lucky with the weather in the end with all field events taking place which would not have seemed possible at the start of the day. Thankyou to those who made use of the overflow carpark. With increasing numbers we need to make everyone aware that there is space available and not to be put off coming down on clubnight because there is no room immediately by the track.

A big thanks to Peter Blackwood for managing the junior women's (W19) team who finished a fine 6th place given the youth of the team. From the senior mens team a big thanks to Rob Dabb and Cameron McNaught from Feilding Moa for donning PNAHC singlets and representing "Team Central". While collectively we were not flash there were some excellent individual efforts with Craig McLean just pipping Mark Searle for best individual performance. The point about attending National Road Relays is that a region such as Manawatu/Wanganui should be represented every year by a number of clubs - not one. If Scottish Harriers can send 14 teams I am sure we can send at least two teams. Inglewood is hosting next years event so expect the president to be knocking on your door.

8 Oct 2009 - National Road Relay - Junior Women and Mens Teams (Christchurch)
PNAHC, Feilding Moa and Wanganui have joined forces to send a team to Christchurch for the National Road Relay to be held over the famous Takahe-Akaroa course this Saturday. Looking at the weather forecast they might be running through snow! The junior women's team looks especially strong with Ariana Blackwood, Stephanie Dickins, Sarah Campion (All Moa); Samantha Blanch (NZ Mountain ruunning rep this year at World champs), Rachel Williamson (PNAHC), Meredith Paterson (Wanganui). - managed by Peter Blackwood. The team comprises Rob Dabb and Cameron McNaught from Feilding Moa while PNAHC provides Craig McLean, Mark Searle, Tim Carroll, Andrew Davenport, Lance Gray and Darren Gray. Both teams are funded entirely by the individuals concerned. Next year the event will be run at Inglewood making it much more affordable for a number of athletes. We wish both teams well.
6 Oct 2009 - Opening Club Night 2009/10 season rankings
Thankyou to all of those parents and athletes who participated last night for the first club night of the season - certainly helped to have some good weather. We expect many more athletes next week with the end of the school holidays upon us. My apologies for a lack of photos as I was tied up with the BBQ but here is a photo from last season which is typical of the good work Jenny Melville does with run, jump, throw (3-6 yrs).

Showing my bias as a male distance runner the results below grabbed my attention with something like 15 athletes in the field.

24 Sept 2009 - Alan Cherry: Life Member
In a first in the clubs history the Palmerston North Athletic and Harrier Club awarded life membership to a non member at last night's Annual General Meeting. Alan Adamson in moving the awarding of Life Membership to Allan Cherry, said although a first for the club it is not something unique in sport and that he had in fact received of a similar award from the Myers Park club in Newcastle some years ago. An award he treasured but felt was undeserving and cheapened that club's life membership. This was certainly not the case with this nomination. Allan Cherry who lives in Taihape, has for more than forty years regularly travelled to Palmerston North and other areas to officiate at athletic meetings. Palmerston North has quickly established itself as a venue athletes like to compete at because of the efficient manner in which meetings are conducted. Allan Cherry plays a big role in this.  Always one of the first appointments that organisers make is  Allan Cherry as field referee, safe in the knowledge that with Allan in charge this area will run smoothly. One of Oceania 's leading officials Allan is held in the highest regard by both officials and athletes alike. Something never more aptly demonstrated than at last years Colgate Games in Wanganui when the club's medal winning children insisted that Mr Cherry join them for their victory photo. With Allan there are no ego's, he's there for the benefit of the sport and a very worthy recipient of this award. The award was approved with acclamation.
